TRICYCLE TERROR: Police, Tricycle Unions Under Fire Over Rising Robbery Cases on Otta-Idiroko Road

A disturbing trend of tricycle-related robberies has gripped commuters traveling along the Otta-Idiroko road, sparking widespread concern and outrage. The frequency and brazen nature of these incidents have led to accusations of complicity against tricycle unions, Toran, Twora, and Roto, and alarming inaction from the Nigeria Police Force.


Commuters have raised alarm over the new trend of using tricycles to rob passengers, which has become increasingly rampant. Initially confined to nighttime, these incidents now occur in broad daylight, with passengers being targeted daily. Victims report that despite numerous complaints filed at the local police station, authorities seem unconcerned.


The perpetrators, often operating in plain sight, primarily target women and teenagers, stealing their valuables. Commuters blame the tricycle unions for neglecting security checks on riders, prioritizing ticket sales instead. Allegations mount against Toran, Twora, and Roto, with critics arguing that their complicity has created an environment conducive to criminal activity.


Furthermore, the police have been accused of inaction and complicity. "The police seem to be turning a blind eye to these incidents," said a commuter who wished to remain anonymous. "We've reported multiple cases, but no action has been taken." The lack of response from law enforcement has emboldened perpetrators, putting commuters' lives at risk.


To address this crisis, commuters are demanding immediate action from the Ogun State Government, law enforcement agencies, and tricycle unions. They urge authorities to conduct thorough investigations into tricycle-related robberies and police inaction, prosecute perpetrators, union officials, and police officers found complicit, implement robust security measures, including background checks for riders, and increase police presence along Otta-Idiroko road.


The situation has become dire, with tricycles, once an affordable and convenient transportation option, now becoming increasingly hazardous. Commuters are calling on the Ogun State Government to intervene promptly, ensuring passenger safety.
