COMMUNITY IN DARKNESS: Sokenu Ibikan Residents Protest Leadership, Demand Electricity Restoration
OGUN STATE, NIGERIA - November 25, 2024
Residents and landlords of Sokenu Ibikan, Obere Otta community in Ogun state staged a peaceful protest yesterday, condemning the community leadership for allegedly conspiring with an unknown electrical contractor to plunge the community into darkness for over a month.
The protesters, who gathered at the residence of Vice Chairman Kazeem Hamad Lanre, expressed their disappointment and frustration with the community leadership. They alleged that the contract awarding process was opaque, and the community was kept in the dark about the details.
"We're tired of being left in the dark," said one protester. "The leadership has failed us, and we demand action."
The protesters accused Chairman Rotimi Adeolu Esan of collecting money through his personal account, which they deemed inappropriate. They also alleged that the community had been operating with a personal account since its inception.
Vice Chairman Kazeem Hamad Lanre denied the allegations, claiming that the contractor refused to repair a faulty transformer until he's paid. However, investigations revealed that the vice chairman's denial was false, as a voice note from the contractor threatened to disconnect the community from the national grid, which he later did.
The community has lost over 1 billion Naira due to the contractor's actions, and crime rates have increased. Business owners have started counting their losses, and residents are living in fear.
The protesters are giving the community leaders an ultimatum: restore electricity within 48 hours or face legal action. They're also threatening to hold a more powerful protest and prevent any community meetings until the issue is resolved and financial documents are audited.
