OTA STORM AFTERMATH: Ogun State Government Absent in Clean-up Efforts as Olota Takes Charge
The recent storm that ravaged Ota on April 21, 2024, left a trail of destruction, prompting concerns about response efforts and government involvement. However, it has emerged that the Olota of Ota, Aworiland, His Royal Highness Oba (Prof) Abdulkabir Obalanlege, Lanlege Ekun II, took the initiative to lead the clean-up and restoration process.
The storm damaged the new 33kvA electrification project, still under construction by an independent contractor for IBEDC. Despite claims, neither the Ogun State Government nor the Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Council participated in the clean-up efforts. The Olota, along with his entourage and palace crew, worked tirelessly for almost four hours, calming the situation and ensuring order.
Contrary to claims, the Ogun State Government did not have any input in the clean-up process, leaving the Olota to single-handedly coordinate the response efforts. He summoned TRACE, the contractor, pole manufacturers, IBEDC, security agencies, and concerned parties to a meeting, demonstrating his commitment to accountability.
After 72 hours without government involvement, Dr. Saheed Oyede and another private individual reached out, inquiring about the delay in clean-up and restoration. The Olota instructed IBEDC to repair and restore electricity within 24 hours, ensuring swift action.
Notably, Hon. Tunji Akinosi, a government representative, donated a hyab for the clean-up, demonstrating official support. However, this gesture was an individual effort and not a representation of the state government's involvement.
The Olota's leadership and initiative in coordinating stakeholders and investigations have been commended by residents and stakeholders. The swift response and effective coordination by the Olota have restored hope and electricity to the affected areas, showcasing the importance of community leadership in times of crisis.
